The Evatt Trophy Schools Model United Nations Security Council Debating Competition South Australia (formerly the Boutros Ghali Shield) is a model United Nations debating competition, putting teams of two students in the shoes of ambassadors to the UN Security Council to debate a series of resolutions from the perspective of one of the UN's member states. Delegates will be required to make intelligent and persuasive speeches to the Council, but must also engage in informal negotiations with other member states in which they may use their skills of diplomacy to convince other nations to change their stance on the resolution. Evatt SA offers an exciting twist to debating as we know it, and is an engaging way for students to learn about international affairs and the challenges of diplomacy.
The 2011 Evatt Trophy was held at the University of South Australia on the 27th and 28th August. In what was a brilliant weekend, a very high standard of debate was witnessed all round. However, congratulations must be given to the following teams who were chosen by our judges as the most outstanding on the day:
