UN Youth's next Policy Dinner is happening on the 23rd November 2011!
The Australian Constitution has provided the framework for our legal and political system since 1901, but most people would be shocked to find that it still reflects the prejudices and ignorance surrounding indigenous people as it did then, allowing for discrimination based on race and ignoring our first people and their role as custodians of the world’s oldest living culture.
Updating our Constitution is an opportunity to take issues addressed in the United Nations Declaration on Indigenous Rights and cement them into our domestic law. Many of our Indigenous people remain in poverty the likes of which can be seen in the Third World, with young indigenous men over-represented in the jails of the nation. This financial year’s first Policy Dinner is a chance for you to learn more about advancing Aboriginal Rights and representation in Australia in both the legal and political sphere with guest speakers from the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement of South Australia over a delicious Asian banquet. It’s time to make change, and to define equality for all Australians!
This Dinner will be the final formal event of the UN Youth SA year, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to socialize with likeminded young people while discussing this important issue.
